Your Shell Guide will help you identify the treasures you discover and share fascinating insights into the shells you encounter—how they live, what they eat, how they reproduce, and the important role they play in the local ecosystem. Throughout the tour, we highlight responsible, eco-conscious shelling practices to ensure these delicate habitats remain protected.

Our 25-foot Sea Pro boats offer comfortable seating, shade, and an onboard restroom, giving you a relaxed and enjoyable ride between shelling locations. Our 6-hour self-guided shelling tour is designed for independent beachcombers and serious shell collectors who want maximum shore time without a rigid schedule. Your captain transports your small group (capped at 6 guests) directly to secluded barrier island beaches, sandbars, and tidal flats in the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
Once ashore, you have 4 to 5 full hours to trek tide lines, hunt for prized Gulf shells, and explore at your own pace. Your captain remains on-site and on standby with the boat nearby, providing a safe base, access to the onboard marine restroom, and fresh ice/water whenever you need a break. Before you step onto the beach, your captain will share key safety guidelines, local terrain tips, and return pickup procedures to ensure a seamless island experience.

What should we bring for a 6-hour full-day shelling trip in the Ten Thousand Islands? +−

Since you will spend 4 to 5 hours on remote, uninhabited barrier islands, proper preparation is key. We strongly recommend wearing sturdy, closed-toe water shoes or neoprene booties to protect your feet from sharp shells, oysters, and submerged debris (flip-flops and sandals are not recommended).
Pack plenty of sun protection, including a wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, and lotion sunscreen (aerosol sprays are not permitted on the boat). Bring your own mesh shelling bags, buckets, or sand scoops for collecting empty shells. While we provide complimentary ice and bottled water in an onboard cooler, you should bring your own snacks, lunch, personal beverages, a waterproof phone case, and optional bug spray. During cooler months, a lightweight windbreaker jacket or towel is also recommended.

Can we collect live seashells or marine animals during the 6-hour self-guided tour? +−

No. Treasure Seekers Shell Tours strictly enforces a 100% ethical, eco-friendly shelling policy on all excursions. Guests are only permitted to collect empty seashells.
In accordance with Florida wildlife conservation laws and federal regulations within the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, any shell containing a living organism—including live Junonias, Lightning Whelks, Florida Horse Conchs, True Tulips, or Olives—must be gently returned to its natural ocean habitat immediately. Living marine creatures such as sand dollars, sea urchins, starfish, and horseshoe crabs are strictly protected and may not be taken. Protecting these living ecosystems ensures that barrier island beaches remain healthy and abundant with seashells for future generations of beachcombers.

What happens if weather conditions become unsafe during our 6-hour shelling tour? +−

Guest safety is our absolute top priority. Tours operate rain or shine during mild coastal weather, but departures are contingent on safe marine and wind conditions.
If your captain determines before departure that weather conditions are unsafe due to severe lightning, heavy squalls, high winds, or dangerous seas, the trip will be delayed or canceled. If Treasure Seekers cancels your scheduled tour due to weather, you will have the choice to reschedule or receive a 100% full refund. Because this is an extended 6-hour trip, your captain continuously monitors live radar while on standby. If inclement weather approaches while you are on the island, your captain will gather the group and safely return to Goodland Boat Park early.
