Once ashore, you explore and shell at your own pace while your captain remains nearby with the boat. This is not a naturalist-led or hands-on guided shelling tour.

This tour is a great choice for experienced shellers, repeat visitors, independent beachcombers, and guests who simply prefer searching on their own.
You don’t have to be an expert. However, if you’re new to shelling and want someone walking with you to help spot and identify shells, one of our guided shelling tours may be a better choice.
What is the difference between self-guided and guided shelling?
On a self-guided tour, your captain gets you to the shelling destination and remains nearby while you explore independently.
On a guided shelling tour, a guide shells alongside the group, helping guests locate productive areas, spot shells, identify finds, and learn about the marine environment.
If you already know what you’re looking for—or simply enjoy the freedom of exploring on your own—the self-guided tour can be an excellent choice.
Will the captain help me find shells on the self-guided tour?
Your captain uses local knowledge, tides and current conditions to select the shelling destination, but the actual beachcombing portion of this trip is designed to be independent.
If you want someone actively searching alongside you, identifying finds and teaching shelling techniques, choose one of our guided tours instead.

The better choice isn’t necessarily the longer tour—it depends on whether independence or hands-on guidance matters more to you.
Is the 4-Hour Self-Guided Shelling Tour private?
No. The standard 4-Hour Self-Guided Shelling Tour is a shared tour, with a maximum of 6 guests per boat.
If your group wants the boat exclusively to yourselves, choose one of our Private Shelling Tours.
How much of the four hours will we actually spend shelling?
The exact amount varies depending on the destination and conditions that day. Many of our Ten Thousand Islands shelling areas are approximately 15–20 minutes by boat from Goodland, allowing the majority of the trip to be spent exploring and shelling.
Your captain may choose a different destination when tides, weather or shelling conditions make another area a better option.
Does the tide matter on the 4-Hour Self-Guided Tour?
Yes. Tides can make a significant difference in what areas are exposed and accessible. Lower water can reveal shell beds, sandbars and tidal areas that aren’t exposed at higher water.
When multiple departure times are available, some may be better aligned with the day’s low tide. If your priority is the best available tide window, Shelly can help you identify which departure is closest to the better low tide for your date.
Do I need to be an experienced sheller to take a self-guided tour?
No. Anyone who is comfortable exploring independently can enjoy this tour.
However, first-time shellers who want help learning where to look, identifying shells, understanding tide lines and distinguishing live from empty shells may get more value from a guided tour.
What kinds of shells might we find?
The Ten Thousand Islands are home to a wide variety of Southwest Florida shells, including Lightning Whelks, Florida Horse Conchs, True and Banded Tulips, Alphabet Cones, Fighting Conchs, Olives, Nutmegs and many others.
What washes ashore changes constantly with tides, currents, winds and weather. Rare finds such as Junonias are possible but never guaranteed.
What shoes and clothing should I wear?
We strongly recommend secure water shoes or other protective footwear suitable for wading and uneven terrain.
These are remote, natural barrier-island beaches—not groomed resort beaches. You may encounter sharp shells, uneven shell beds, soft sand and muck, and mangrove roots or stumps protruding through the sand or shallow water.
Wear clothing appropriate for sun and water, and bring a hat, polarized sunglasses and lotion sunscreen. Footwear is ultimately your choice, but choose something secure and protective enough for the environment.
Can I collect live shells or marine animals?
No. We practice ethical shelling and collect empty shells only. If a shell contains a living animal, it should remain where it was found or be gently returned to the water.
If you’re uncertain whether a shell is occupied, ask your captain before taking it.
Where does the tour depart, and when should I arrive?
The tour departs from Goodland Boat Park, 750 Palm Point Drive, Goodland, Florida 34140.
Arrive 15–20 minutes before departure. Parking is $10 per vehicle and is paid by credit card. Guests with a valid Collier County Beach Parking Permit park free. Overflow parking is available outside the gates when needed.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Your captain monitors weather and marine conditions closely. Rain alone does not necessarily cause a cancellation, and the Ten Thousand Islands provide different route options depending on conditions.
We do not operate when conditions are unsafe. If Treasure Seekers cancels because of unsafe weather, we’ll work with you to reschedule or provide a full refund.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 7 days (168 hours) before departure for a full refund.
Optional Trip Protection is 15% of the booking total and must be selected when booking. It allows cancellation up to 48 hours before departure for a full refund.
Cancellations within 7 days without applicable Trip Protection and no-shows are non-refundable.
