Your guide doesn’t simply drop you on a beach. The guide explores with the group, helps locate productive shell areas, points out shells that are easy to overlook, identifies your finds and explains the marine life and ecology of the Ten Thousand Islands.
You’re still free to explore at your own pace, but expert help is available throughout the shelling portion of the trip.
What's the difference between the 4-Hour Guided and 4-Hour Self-Guided tours?
Both provide four hours in the Ten Thousand Islands, but the shelling experience is different.
On the 4-Hour Guided Tour, a guide shells alongside you and helps locate and identify finds.
On the 4-Hour Self-Guided Tour, your captain selects the destination and remains nearby while you explore independently.

Does the tide affect the 4-Hour Guided Shelling Tour?
Yes. Tides can have a major effect on shelling. Lower water can expose shell beds, tidal flats and sandbars that may be covered at higher tide.
When different departure times are available, some may line up better with the day’s low tide. If finding the best available tide is important to you, ask Shelly which departure is closest to the better low tide for your date.
Will the guide help us find rare shells such as a Junonia?
Your guide will help you recognize productive shelling areas and identify shells you might otherwise overlook, but no particular shell can be guaranteed.
Junonias are genuinely rare. Finding one is exciting precisely because it doesn’t happen every day. Depending on natural conditions, you may encounter Florida Horse Conchs, Lightning Whelks, True Tulips, Alphabet Cones, Fighting Conchs, Olives and many other Southwest Florida species.
Do I need any shelling experience?
Not at all. One of the advantages of a guided tour is that beginners can learn while they shell.
Your guide can help you understand where to look, recognize different species and determine whether a shell is empty and may be collected. Experienced shellers can also benefit from local knowledge of the Ten Thousand Islands.
What kind of shoes should I wear?
We strongly recommend secure water shoes or other protective footwear suitable for wading and uneven terrain.
These are remote natural beaches rather than groomed resort beaches. Conditions can include sharp shells, uneven shell beds, soft sand and muck, and mangrove roots or stumps protruding through the sand or shallow water.
Footwear is ultimately your choice, but select something secure and protective that you’re comfortable getting wet.
Can we collect live shells or marine animals?
No. Treasure Seekers practices ethical shelling and collects empty shells only.
If a shell contains a living animal, it should remain where it was found or be gently returned to the water. Your guide can help you determine whether a shell is occupied and teach you about the living marine animals you encounter.
Is the 4-Hour Guided Tour good for families and children?
Yes. The hands-on nature of the guided tour can be especially fun for families because children aren’t simply walking a beach looking for shells—the guide can help them identify what they discover and learn about the animals and ecosystem around them.
Families with very young children or guests with mobility concerns are welcome to contact us about what to expect.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Captains monitor weather and marine conditions closely. Rain alone doesn’t necessarily mean your tour will be canceled, and routes can sometimes be adjusted based on conditions.
We don’t operate when conditions are unsafe. If Treasure Seekers cancels your tour because of unsafe weather, we’ll work with you to reschedule or provide a full refund.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 7 days (168 hours) before departure for a full refund.
Optional Trip Protection costs 15% of the booking total and must be selected when booking. Trip Protection allows you to cancel up to 48 hours before departure for a full refund.
Cancellations within 7 days without applicable Trip Protection and no-shows are non-refundable.
